A group of residents who share an interest in walking have met informally for some time to explore interesting and attractive locations in the vicinity of London. There are three outings per year and recent destinations have included Marlow and Guildford. The arrangements are informal – those interested in taking part meet at a pre-arranged location in London, usually a railway station, and then make their way to the ramble destination. The walks are planned to be non-taxing – the primary aim is to enjoy the surroundings, including a pub lunch, in good company.
Saturday, 27th September saw a band of 13 intrepid Ockendonians trekking around East Sussex. Starting from Stonegate station, the destination was the Bell at Burwash for lunch followed by a visit to Batemans, Kipling’s home. Despite much head-scratching over route directions and a few false trails (Tony’s whistle proved invaluable), the mission’s objectives were fully accomplished and the group triumphantly returned to Stonegate just in time to miss the hourly train to London.
The next outing is planned for Saturday, 12th January. E-mail us email@example.com if you want to join in the fun.
